Tug of war event Saturday on river

Get those muscles in shape for summer this weekend by participating in the Battle On the Bernard tug of war, planned for Saturday afternoon across the San Bernard River at FM 2611, Sportsman Span Bridge.
The event, sponsored by the cities of the West Brazos, offers tug of war competition for children, teens and adults.
The highlight is the Mayor’s Tug, pitting teams from each city against each other. The trophy for this tug is a hand-carved statue of a pelican nicknamed BOB. The winning city earns the right to display BOB until the next competition. Sweeny was the winner of the first Battle on the Bernard last August.
In a publicity stunt last week to heighten the friendly spirit of competition, Mayors Ken Corley of Brazoria and Laurie Kincannon of West Columbia “liberated” BOB from Sweeny City Hall, but the duo was swiftly brought to justice and BOB was safely returned.
The event will begin Saturday with the Kids Tug at 12:15 p.m. Participants should be at the west side of the river by 12 noon. Teams may have no fewer than 6 kids and no more than 10. Age groups are six and under; 7 – 10, and 11 – 13.
The Teens Tug is open to teams ages 14 – 18, with up to 14 members per team. These teams will compete with the big rope across the river. Teams must register by noon.
The Adults Tug event will begin at 1 p.m. Teams may have as many as 20 members but only 14 will be allowed on the two-minute tug. There is a limit of 16 teams, so early registration is suggested. Area fire departments, service organizations, or just groups of friends are encouraged to take part. Gloves are recommended.
Spectators are encouraged to come and cheer for their favorite teams. Bring lawn chairs. There will be several vendors on site offering food and beverages. Battle on the Bernard t-shirts and caps will also be on sale at the event, or in advance from the Brazoria, Sweeny or West Columbia Chambers of Commerce, County Commissioner Precinct 4 office and High 5 Bar and Grill. T-shirts are $10 and caps are $12.
