San Bernard tug event approaches
Published February 20, 2010
BRAZORIA — Spring Break is a great opportunity to join the
competition of The Battle On the Bernard, known as BOB, a friendly tug of war
brought to the public by West of the Brazos communities,
This year’s free event begins at 1 p.m. March 27 on the San Bernard River at the
FM 2611 Sportsman Span/Churchill Bridge.
With 900 feet of “war” rope, trophies and ribbons and a cleanup of the area, the
family friendly event is taking shape. New this year is a tug for the youngsters
— a “Kids Tug.” The children’s tug will begin at 12:15 p.m. on the west side of
the river. Those participating in this event should be at the tug site by noon.
The age groups for the Kids Tug are: 6 and younger, 7 to 10 years old, and 11 to
13 years old. Each team will consist of no fewer than six kids and no more than
10. For rules and application forms, visit www.battleonthebernard.com.
Adult tug teams up to 20 strong — only 12 at a time will actually be doing the
two-minute tug — should be registered and ready to go for the first “tug” of the
day at 1 p.m.
Those involved in organizations such as school bands, football teams,
cheerleaders, volunteer fire departments, police departments, service
organizations or groups of friends, are invited to compete in the “tug” with a
team.
Though teams can register right up to the day of the event, early registration
is appreciated. The first teams to register will receive 12 free BOB caps per
team. For registration, vendor and sponsorship forms, visit the Web site. There
are limited spaces for booths for nonprofit groups at the event for no charge.
There also are limited spaces for “for-profit” vendors. You may register with
the Brazoria, Sweeny or West Columbia Chambers of Commerce or the Pct. 4 county
office in Brazoria.
